Welcome to Photomarathon.Org

So you have a digital camera. Now what?

Some people want more from their cameras than just vacation snapshots. One outlet for their creativity is the style of photo competition called a photomarathon.

A Photomarathon is a photography competition with a twist. Photomarathons generally involve the competitors meeting at the pre-set start location. At the start of the competition, the first of the marathon's themes are announced by the marathon director. Competitors then work to take pictures that fit the themes. Competitors then return to the competition location where they turn in their submissions for the first theme and receive the second set of themes.

It is not your physical condition that decides whether you win this type of competition, it is your sense of improvisation, fun and creativity that is stressed throughout the Photomarathon. Photomarathons vary in length, locations, and the number and types of themes. But they are all fun and give you a great chance to use your creativity and meet others interested in photography. Photomarathons have proved popular across Europe, with regular events in Denmark, Germany and Russia as well as the Global Photomarthon.

Anyone and everyone can participate in the Photomarathon. The only thing you need is a digital with a memory stick to remove for uploading the pictures prior to judging. As the Photomarathon events may include photos to be taken at night, all entrants are advised to have a flash for their cameras, as well as a tripod if possible.

Rice Village Photomarathon Winners!
Photomarathon On September 2, 2007, photographers met at Mi Luna from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. for the pre-event social before setting out to capture the photos of the day.  The themes for the Rice Village Photomarathon were "Upside Down", "Before and After", "City Life, and "Caught in the Act".  The following were the winners for each category:

Upside Down - Amanda Duran's photograph of the upside down glasses on the shelf.  This photograph was chosen based on the colors and framing.  These criteria make this a memorable photograph.

Before & After - Collin McGinn's photograph of the Juicy Fruit gum package.  This photograph is creatively framed in black and it has a simple subject matter that clearly captures the theme.

City Life - Greta Mee's photograph of the window with the bullet hole.  This photograph was creatively composed to abstractly illustrate an attribute of city life.

Caught in the Act - Ashley Mauer's photograph of the man kneeling while smoking a cigarette.  this is a well framed portrait of a man smoking apparently while on break at his job.

To choose the overall winner in each of the photomarathons, we have chosen the picture that most immediately captured our attention.  While it might be because of the shameless wearing of the photomarathon t-shirt, the picture that most immediately caught our attention was the one taken by Robin Mauer of her daughter, Ashley, upside down standing on her hands.

Photographing Children Around the World - by Jim Zuckerman

Photographing Children Around the World

by Jim Zuckerman , author of Techniques of Natural Light Photography , Professional Photographer’s Guide to Shooting & Selling Nature & Wildlife Photos , Perfect Exposure: Jim Zuckerman's Secrets to Great Photographs ... and more One of the delights in traveling internationally is interacting with children of many cultures. They are almost universally both shy and curious, and often in small villages in the Third World a visit from a foreigner is the highlight of their day. In most cases, they are happy to pose for pictures when coaxed with a friendly smile.

Sometimes, a small amount of money is expected as a gratuity. Over the past thirty years, so many tourists have snapped pictures of local people and then given small gifts or money in exchange that it has become the norm. I have never minded paying for wonderful photographs, but I make sure in advance that any remuneration includes the signing of a model release by a parent. Often, I will photograph children selling souvenirs, and the deal I make is that I will pay their asking price (which is always inflated at least 100% of the value of the item) if I can take pictures. This usually works, since they want to make a sale.
Effective Lighting

There are only two types of natural light that should be used for shooting children, or for that matter any person, when outdoors: diffused and low angled sunlight. Diffused light occurs when a cloud cover disperses sunlight similar to what a softbox does to a flash head in the studio. It is soft and shadowless, and your subject can be placed anywhere where the background is complementary to the composition. However, if the sun is high in the sky, harsh shadows and contrasty light will invariably degrade the image. The eye sockets go dark, the nose and forehead will be light, and the child looks hard under the garish illumination. "
